What Is Spin for Steven?
Spin for Steven is an annual cycling fundraiser organized by Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of Louisville in support of the Steven Vanover Foundation. Over time, the event has raised more than $350,000 for the foundation, helping turn remembrance into something active, public, and lasting.
What makes Spin for Steven matter is that it is tied to something bigger than a single event. The Steven Vanover Foundation’s mission is to support patients and fund the science that leads to cures for sarcoma and other rare cancers. The foundation also supports patients and families and funds academic scholarships, which gives the work both a medical and human impact.
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that begins in the body’s connective and supportive tissues, including things like bone, muscle, fat, cartilage, blood vessels, and fibrous tissue. Soft tissue sarcoma is a broad term for cancers that start in soft tissues such as muscle, tendons, fat, blood vessels, and nerves. Because sarcomas are rare and often complex, research and specialized support matter a lot.
The Steven Vanover Foundation says it is currently helping fund a clinical trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering, research at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and a medical oncologist focused on sarcoma within the Norton Cancer Institute. That gives a clearer picture of what support like this can actually lead to beyond awareness alone.
I made this video for Spin for Steven a few years ago, and I wanted to share it here as part of that memory. For me, this post is not just about posting an old video. It is also about recognizing an event and a mission that continue to carry real meaning.
